UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80898: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 4, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfs: clear PGprivate2 on copy-to-cache append failure netfspgpriv2copytocache() marks the folio with PGprivate2 before netfspgpriv2copyfolio() appends it to the copy-to-cache rolling buffer. If the append fails, the folio is not queued for cache writeback, so the PGprivate2 state and its reference must be released immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What condition is required to trigger the flaw?

The failure occurs when netfs_pgpriv2_copy_to_cache() marks a folio with PG_private_2 and the subsequent append to the copy-to-cache rolling buffer fails. The affected folio is then not queued for cache writeback.

2

What is the immediate effect of the failed append?

PG_private_2 remains set and the associated folio reference is not released. The fix clears that state and releases the reference immediately when the append fails.

3

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.
