UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80954: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 11, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i3c: Fix unlocked dereference of dev->desc in i3cdevicegetsupportedxfermode() i3cdevicegetsupportedxfermode() uses dev->desc to obtain the master controller. However, dev->desc must not be dereferenced unless bus->lock is held, and this function does not take that lock. The function only needs access to the master controller associated with the device's bus. Use dev->bus instead, which is always valid for the lifetime of the device and does not require dereferencing dev->desc.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.

2

What level of access does an attacker need?

The CVSS vector indicates local access, low attack complexity, low privileges, and no user interaction. It also indicates high potential impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

3

What condition triggers the unsafe access?

The issue occurs when i3c_device_get_supported_xfer_mode() dereferences dev->desc without holding bus->lock. The resolved change obtains the master controller through dev->bus instead, because it remains valid for the device lifetime.
