UBUNTU-CVE-2026-80987: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NTB: ntbtransport: Reject oversized TX buffers ntbprocesstx() handles an oversized buffer by calling txhandler() with a NULL data pointer and returning success. ntbnetdev therefore neither frees the skb in its completion callback nor takes its enqueue error path, leaking it. Reject oversized buffers in ntbtransporttxenqueue() before acquiring a queue entry and return -EMSGSIZE. The caller retains ownership of the buffer, and the preceding netdev patch frees the skb when enqueue returns this permanent error.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are in scope: linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, and linux-gcp-fips. The issue is in the kernel NTB transport and NTB network-device handling path.
What would an attacker need to do to trigger the denial of service?
The vulnerable path is triggered when an oversized transmit buffer is handled by ntb_process_tx(). The condition can leak a socket buffer because the enqueue operation reports success despite passing a NULL data pointer to the transmit handler.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
Repeated handling of oversized transmit buffers can leak skb memory, causing a denial of service through resource exhaustion. The supplied severity vector indicates network reachability, low attack complexity, and no required privileges or user interaction, with impact limited to availability.
What changes in the resolved implementation?
The fix rejects oversized buffers in ntb_transport_tx_enqueue() before a queue entry is acquired and returns -EMSGSIZE. This leaves buffer ownership with the caller so the network-device error path can free the skb.
