UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89497: High severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: orangefs: skip leading spaces before parsing client debug masks orangefspreparecdmarray() sizes each client debug keyword buffer with strcspn(cdshead, " "), but then parses the keyword with %s. The %s conversion skips leading whitespace, while strcspn() does not. If a client debug entry starts with a space, the allocation can be sized for an empty keyword while sscanf() copies the following non-empty token. This can write past the end of the allocated keyword buffer. Skip leading spaces before computing the keyword length so the allocation matches the string parsed by sscanf().

Frequently Asked Questions
What access and input are required to trigger this issue?
The vulnerability is rated as requiring local access and low privileges, with no user interaction. Exploitation requires a client debug entry whose keyword begins with a space, causing the allocated buffer length to differ from the token parsed by the kernel.
Which Ubuntu systems should be evaluated?
Evaluate systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages: linux, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-fips, linux-gcp-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-oracle. The affected code is in OrangeFS client debug-mask parsing, so systems that do not use or configure OrangeFS client debug entries may not reach the vulnerable parsing path.
What can be done before an update is available?
Avoid client debug-mask entries with leading spaces before a debug keyword. Review relevant OrangeFS client debug configuration or supplied input and remove leading whitespace from entries until the kernel fix is deployed.
