UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89525: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udf: reject VAT indexes equal to the entry count UDF 1.50 virtual partition mapping uses the VAT as an array of physical block mappings. snumentries stores the number of entries in that array, not the highest valid index. The valid VAT indexes are therefore below snumentries. udfgetpblockvirt15() currently rejects only indexes greater than snumentries. A crafted image can request index snumentries, pass the bounds check, and make the kernel read one entry past the allocated VAT table. Change the check to reject block >= snumentries, so the count is handled as an exclusive upper bound. A crafted UDF image reproduced this on origin/master commit 0e35b9b6ec0ffcc5e23cbdec09f5c622ad532b53 with a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report in udfgetpblockvirt15(). Trail of Bits has a reproducer that triggers kernel panic demonstrating the bug, and can share it if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are exposed when they process a crafted UDF image using UDF 1.50 virtual partition mapping. The issue can be triggered by mounting or otherwise accessing such media or images.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs to provide a crafted UDF image whose VAT requests an index equal to the VAT entry count. This bypasses the flawed bounds check and causes a read one entry beyond the allocated VAT table.
What is the likely impact of successful exploitation?
The provided reproducer triggers a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report in udf_get_pblock_virt15() and demonstrates a kernel panic. The data does not establish impacts beyond this out-of-bounds read and denial-of-service condition.
How can I determine whether a system is affected or has been targeted?
Affected systems may log a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report involving udf_get_pblock_virt15(), potentially followed by a kernel panic, when handling a UDF image. Review kernel logs for these signatures and investigate recently mounted or processed UDF media or image files.
