UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89548: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: SUNRPC: always drain cachecleaner before destroying a cachedetail sunrpcdestroycachedetail() only cancels the global cachecleaner delayedwork when cachelist is empty. During per-netns teardown cachelist is never empty because initnet's caches remain registered, so the cancel never fires. After unlink, the caller proceeds to cachedestroynet() which kfrees the cachedetail while cacheclean() may still hold a dangling pointer to it. The result is a use-after-free: cachedequeue() takes cd->queuelock on freed memory, and cacheput() dereferences cd->cacheput as a function pointer from freed slab. Drop the listempty guard so that canceldelayedworksync() always runs, ensuring any in-flight cacheclean() completes before the cachedetail is freed. Re-arm the cleaner afterwards if other caches are still registered.

In sunrpc_destroy_cache_detail(), remove the cache_list empty-check so cancel_delayed_work_sync() always runs before freeing cache_detail; then re-arm the cache_cleaner delayed work if other caches remain registered.

Frequently Asked Questions
What level of access is required to exploit this issue?
The severity vector indicates local attack access with low privileges required and no user interaction. It is not described as remotely exploitable.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
When is the vulnerable race reachable?
The race occurs during per-network-namespace teardown while other cache entries, including those associated with init_net, remain registered. In that state, cleanup work can still access a cache object after it has been freed.
What could successful exploitation allow?
The issue is a use-after-free in kernel SUNRPC cache cleanup. The provided severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
