UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89562: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ip6gre: fix hardware header length for NBMA tunnels ip6gretnllinkconfigroute() accumulates the lower device's hardware header length into dev->hardheaderlen whenever headerops is set. This is incorrect for both users of headerops. ip6gretap and ip6erspan have a fixed Ethernet hardware header length. For an NBMA ip6gre tunnel, ip6greheader() creates only the GRE header, the optional FOU or GUE header, and the outer IPv6 header. The lower device header is headroom needed later, not part of the tunnel device's hardware header. Keep the lower device header in neededheadroom. Set hardheaderlen to the tunnel header length only for ARPHRDIP6GRE devices with headerops, and leave the fixed Ethernet header length unchanged for tap and erspan devices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to be affected?
Affected systems are Ubuntu installations using one of the listed kernel packages and configured with IPv6 GRE tunnel devices. The issue specifically concerns NBMA ip6gre tunnels and also corrects header-length handling for ip6gretap and ip6erspan devices.
What access does an attacker need?
The severity vector indicates local access with low privileges is required, and no user interaction is required. The provided data does not describe a remote attack path.
Is a default installation affected?
The issue is tied to IPv6 GRE tunnel configuration and header handling. The provided data does not establish that a default Ubuntu installation creates or uses these tunnel types.
What can be done before a kernel update is available?
The provided data does not specify a workaround. Reducing exposure would require avoiding or restricting use of affected IPv6 GRE, ip6gretap, or ip6erspan tunnel configurations where operationally feasible.
