UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89585: High severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: auxdisplay: charlcd: cancel backlight work on registration failure With CONFIGCHARLCDBLFLASH, charlcdinit() schedules blwork before charlcdregister() calls miscregister(). If registration fails, the caller frees the charlcd object while delayed work still contains its address. Add charlcddeinit() to cancel the delayed work and turn the backlight off. Use it for both registration rollback and normal unregistration.

Add charlcd_deinit() to cancel the delayed backlight work and turn the backlight off, and call it during both registration rollback when charlcd_register() fails and normal unregistration; this prevents delayed work from retaining the freed charlcd object address.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
The kernel must be built with CONFIG_CHARLCD_BL_FLASH, and charlcd registration must fail after delayed backlight work has been scheduled. The affected path involves the auxiliary-display charlcd component and its backlight handling.
Who is realistically exposed?
Exposure is limited to systems using the charlcd auxiliary-display functionality with CONFIG_CHARLCD_BL_FLASH enabled. An attacker needs local access and low privileges, as reflected by the local attack vector and low-privileges requirement.
What is the impact if the issue is triggered?
A failed registration can free the charlcd object while queued delayed work still references it, creating a use-after-free condition. The provided severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
Is there a mitigation when an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
The described vulnerable path depends on CONFIG_CHARLCD_BL_FLASH. Avoiding use of the charlcd backlight flashing functionality prevents the stated delayed-work path from being scheduled.
