UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89597: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: uvesafb: unregister connector callback on init failure uvesafbinit() registers the v86d connector callback before registering the platform driver. If platformdriverregister() fails, the function returns the error directly and leaves the connector callback registered. The later platform-device failure path already unregisters the callback. Add the same cleanup before the final return when platform-driver registration fails. This issue was identified during our ongoing static-analysis research while reviewing kernel code.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What condition triggers the faulty cleanup path?
The issue occurs when uvesafb_init() has registered the v86d connector callback and platform_driver_register() then fails. In that case, the function returns without unregistering the previously registered callback.
What access does an attacker need according to the supplied severity vector?
The vector indicates local attack access, low attack complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. It rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
