UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89605: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ecryptfs: release message context on send failure ecryptfssendmessagelocked() moves a message context from the free list to the allocated list before sending the request to the userspace daemon. If ecryptfssendmiscdev() fails, the context is left on the allocated list and cannot be reused. Move it back to the free list on failure and clear the caller's pointer.

When ecryptfs_send_message_locked() or ecryptfs_send_miscdev() fails, move the message context from the allocated list back to the free list and clear the caller's pointer so the context can be reused.
Linux kernel eCryptfs message handling message context lifecycle on send failure = return context to free list and clear caller pointer

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What level of access does an attacker need?
The supplied vector indicates local access, low privileges, and no user interaction are required.
What condition triggers the flaw?
The issue occurs when ecryptfs_send_miscdev() fails after ecryptfs_send_message_locked() has moved a message context from the free list to the allocated list. The context is then not returned for reuse.
Can affected kernel versions be identified from this information?
No affected or fixed version numbers are provided. Package names alone do not establish whether a particular installed kernel build contains the fix.
