UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89626: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: sensor: custom: Fix field sysfs group cleanup on failure hidsensorcustomaddattributes() creates one sysfs group for each custom sensor field. If sysfscreategroup() fails after some groups have already been created, the function returns the error without removing the previously created groups. Add a local unwind path to remove the groups that were already created. With enablesensor exposed only after the field attributes are ready, this path can free sensorinst->fields without leaving enablesensor able to access pointers into that array.

In hid_sensor_custom_add_attributes(), add a local unwind path that removes all previously created sysfs groups when a later sysfs_create_group() fails, before freeing sensor_inst->fields; expose enable_sensor only after the field attributes are fully created.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What conditions are required for exploitation?
The supplied vector indicates adjacent-network attack access, low attack complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction. The issue occurs when creation of a custom HID sensor field sysfs group fails after earlier field groups have already been created.
What is the security impact?
The vulnerability is rated high with a CVSS score of 8.8 and has high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. The failed cleanup can leave enable_sensor able to access pointers into a freed sensor_inst->fields array.
Is a default configuration known to be affected?
The available data does not state whether the vulnerable custom HID sensor functionality is enabled or reachable in a default Ubuntu kernel configuration.
How can I determine whether a system is affected?
Verify whether the system is running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel package families and consult the Ubuntu CVE record for the package status. The provided data does not include fixed package versions or a runtime detection method.
