UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89662: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFSD: Prevent lock owner use-after-free during client teardown destroyclient() releases a client's open owners, but a lock owner whose only reference is a blocked lock (nbl) stays on clownerstrhashtbl. clienthasstate() does not count a bare owner, so DESTROYCLIENTID can reach destroyclient() with such owners present. destroyclient() then walks the table, calling removeblockedlocks() on each owner without a reference. Freeing a blocked lock drops the owner reference held via flcowner. The per-net laundromat reaps blocked locks from nn->blockedlockslru independently of client state. The two paths share blockedlockslock only for the list splice, not the owner's lifetime. The laundromat therefore frees the owner as destroyclient() dereferences it, a NULL dereference in removeblockedlocks(). nfsd4releaselockowner() holds a reference across the same call; destroyclient() does not. Hold cllock across the walk, taking a reference and unhashing each owner, then drop it before removeblockedlocks() and nfs4putstateowner(), which take blockedlockslock and cllock.

During __destroy_client(), hold cl_lock across the owner-table walk, take a reference and unhash each lock owner, then drop cl_lock before calling remove_blocked_locks() and nfs4_put_stateowner(), which acquire blocked_locks_lock and cl_lock.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are in scope?
The issue applies to Ubuntu systems using the listed Linux kernel packages: linux, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-fips, linux-gcp-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-oracle. The vulnerable code is in NFSD, so exposure is relevant to systems providing NFS server functionality.
What does exploitation require?
The vulnerability is network-reachable and requires no privileges or user interaction according to the supplied vector. Exploitation depends on a client teardown occurring while a lock owner is retained only by a blocked lock and the blocked-lock cleanup path races with client destruction.
What is the likely impact?
The race can cause a use-after-free and NULL dereference while the server processes blocked locks during client teardown. The provided severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
