UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89694: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: check client ownership when cancelling a copy-notify stateid On the OFFLOADCANCEL path (clp != NULL), managecpntfstate() freed the target cpntf state without checking ownership. The lookup key st->siopaque.soid is allocated cyclically (guessable) and the embedded clientid is the fixed per-net nn->s2scpclid, so any authenticated NFSv4.2 client could cancel and free another client's copy-notify stateid. Compare the creating clientid recorded in state->cppclid against the requesting client's clclientid and return nfserrbadstateid on a mismatch instead of freeing the entry.

On the OFFLOAD_CANCEL path, compare the creating clientid in state->cp_p_clid with the requesting client's cl_clientid; on mismatch, return nfserr_bad_stateid instead of freeing the copy-notify state.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can exploit this issue?
Any authenticated NFSv4.2 client can exploit it. The client must be able to issue an OFFLOAD_CANCEL request against a copy-notify stateid.
What is the impact of a successful exploit?
An attacker can cancel and free another client's copy-notify stateid. The affected server previously did not verify that the requesting client owned the target state.
Why can another client's stateid be targeted?
The stateid lookup identifier is allocated cyclically and is guessable, while its embedded client ID is a fixed per-network value. This allows an authenticated client to target copy-notify state created by another client.
How does the resolved code prevent the issue?
It compares the client ID that created the copy-notify state with the requesting client's client ID. If they differ, the server returns nfserr_bad_stateid rather than freeing the state entry.
