UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89774: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: SCO: hold sk properly in scoconnready sk deref in scoconnready must be done either under conn->lock, or holding a refcount, to avoid concurrent close. conn->sk and parent sk is currently accessed without either, and without checking parent->skstate: [Task 1] [Task 2] scosockrelease scoconnready sk = conn->sk locksock(sk) conn->sk = NULL locksock(sk) releasesock(sk) scosockkill(sk) UAF on sk deref and similarly for access to scogetsocklisten() return value. Fix possible UAF by holding sk refcount in scoconnready() and making scogetsocklisten() increase refcount. Also recheck after locksock that the socket is still valid. Adjust conn->sk locking so it's protected also by locksock() of the associated socket if any.

In the Bluetooth SCO connection handling code, protect conn->sk with conn->lock and the associated socket's lock_sock() where applicable; recheck that the socket remains valid after lock_sock(); hold a socket reference in sco_conn_ready(), and make sco_get_sock_listen() increment the returned socket's refcount to prevent use-after-free during concurrent close.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The affected software list includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-riscv, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
What access does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
The vector is adjacent network (AV:A), with low attack complexity and no privileges or user interaction required. The issue is in Bluetooth SCO socket handling, so exposure is relevant where the affected kernel's Bluetooth functionality is reachable over the adjacent network.
What is the impact if exploitation succeeds?
The vulnerability is a use-after-free condition involving SCO socket access during concurrent close handling. It is rated high severity at 8.8, with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
How can I determine whether a system has the fix?
Check the Ubuntu security advisory for CVE-2026-89774 and compare the installed kernel package against the fixed package version listed there. The upstream Linux kernel fix is identified by commit 4e37f6452d586b95c346a9abdd2fb80b67794f39.
