UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89779: Critical severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: validate ef->size covers the record's name and value When an EA record has a non-zero ef->size, ntfsreadea() only checks that the record fits in the remaining buffer (easize > bytes), not that ef->size is large enough to hold the record's own namelen + 1 + elength. A crafted image can pass validation with, e.g., ef->size = 24 but elength = 0xffff. ntfsgetea() then trusts elength and copies it out of the undersized record, reading past the kmalloc(info->size) allocation and leaking heap memory to userspace via getxattr(): BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in ntfsgetea (fs/ntfs3/xattr.c:302) Read of size 65535 at addr ffff888100794550 by task exploit asanmemcpy (mm/kasan/shadow.c:105) ntfsgetea (fs/ntfs3/xattr.c:302) ntfsgetxattr (fs/ntfs3/xattr.c:848) vfsgetxattr (fs/xattr.c:441) vfsgetxattr (fs/xattr.c:474) dogetxattr (fs/xattr.c:800) pathgetxattrat (fs/xattr.c:868) dosyscall64 (arch/x86/entry/syscall64.c:94) The buggy address is located 80 bytes inside of allocated 84-byte region in cache kmalloc-96 Compute the size the record needs and require ef->size to cover it.

In fs/ntfs3, compute the size required for the EA record's name and value (name_len + 1 + elength) and require ef->size to cover that size before ntfs_get_ea() reads or copies the value.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an attacker need to trigger this issue?
The attacker needs a crafted NTFS image containing a malformed extended-attribute record whose declared record size is too small for its name and value length. The vulnerable path is reached when NTFS3 processes that record and a user retrieves the attribute through getxattr().
What is the practical impact?
The out-of-bounds read can copy data beyond the allocated extended-attribute buffer and leak kernel heap memory to userspace. The reported condition can also produce a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds error.
How can administrators recognize a possible trigger?
A KASAN-enabled system may log a slab-out-of-bounds read in ntfs_get_ea, with calls including ntfs_getxattr, __vfs_getxattr, and do_getxattr. The example reports a read of size 65535 from an allocation in the kmalloc-96 cache.
