UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89823: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm: fix race between partial drmdevregister() failure and ioctl If drmdevregister() fails after registering a minor (e.g. render minor registered, primary minor fails), userspace could have opened the first minor and entered a drmdeventer() critical section. Since the unplugged flag was never set, the ioctl proceeds while the error path tears down device resources. Fix this by introducing drmdevsynchronizeunplug(), which sets the unplugged flag and waits for the SRCU barrier, ensuring all in-flight drmdeventer() critical sections complete before cleanup proceeds; call it on the error path of drmdevregister().

Introduce drm_dev_synchronize_unplug(), which sets the unplugged flag and waits for the SRCU barrier so all in-flight drm_dev_enter() critical sections complete before cleanup; call it on the error path of drm_dev_register().

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages may be exposed when a DRM device registration partially fails after at least one device minor has been registered. A local user that can access the already registered DRM minor is the relevant attacker.
What conditions are needed for exploitation?
Exploitation requires a partial drm_dev_register() failure, such as successful render-minor registration followed by primary-minor registration failure. Userspace must open the successfully registered minor and enter an ioctl path while the kernel is tearing down device resources.
Does exploitation require user interaction or remote access?
No user interaction is required, and the attack vector is local. The supplied vector also indicates low attack complexity and low privileges required.
What is the security impact?
The race can allow an ioctl to continue using device resources while the registration error path destroys those resources. The supplied severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as high.
What does the fix change?
The fix sets the DRM device unplugged flag and waits for in-flight drm_dev_enter() critical sections to finish before cleanup continues after drm_dev_register() fails. This prevents ioctls from proceeding concurrently with resource teardown.
