UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89850: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: qla2xxx: Don't query firmware state while chip is down qla2x00fwstateshow() initializes rval to QLAFUNCTIONFAILED and jumps to the out: label when the chip is down or EEH is busy. The out: block then re-issued qla2x00getfirmwarestate() because rval != QLASUCCESS, defeating the chip-down/EEH-busy guards and issuing a mailbox command (outside optrommutex) during ISP reset or PCI error recovery, which can hang the adapter. It also turned a normal in-lock mailbox failure into a second unsynchronized mailbox attempt. Make the out: fallback only mark the firmware state as unknown. The mailbox is now issued at most once, inside optrommutex, and only when the chip is up and not EEH-busy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to be exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages and using the qla2xxx SCSI driver are relevant. The unsafe path is triggered when the adapter chip is down or PCI error recovery (EEH) is busy.
What is the operational impact if the vulnerable path is reached?
A firmware-state query can issue an unsynchronized mailbox command during an ISP reset or PCI error recovery. This can hang the adapter.
Does the fix change how firmware state is queried during failures?
Yes. When the chip is down, EEH is busy, or the in-lock mailbox query fails, the firmware state is marked unknown rather than attempting a second mailbox command. Firmware mailbox access is limited to one query inside optrom_mutex when the chip is up and not EEH-busy.
