UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89855: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: qla2xxx: Serialize flash version read in reset handler The "update cache versions without reset" sysfs reset operation (0x20261) calls getflashversion(), which reads hardware flash registers, without holding ha->optrommutex. The VPD update path serializes the same call under optrommutex, so this reset path can interleave its flash register accesses with a concurrent VPD or optrom flash operation and corrupt the reads. Hold ha->optrommutex across the getflashversion() call to match the VPD update path.

Serialize the flash version read by holding ha->optrom_mutex across the get_flash_version() call, matching the VPD update path.
Linux kernel SCSI qla2xxx reset handler ha->optrom_mutex = held across get_flash_version()

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu kernel package with the qla2xxx SCSI driver are relevant, including ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, and the listed AWS, Azure, and GCP kernel variants. The race concerns QLogic adapter flash-register access.
What conditions are needed to trigger the race?
The "update cache versions without reset" sysfs reset operation, identified as 0x20261, must call get_flash_version() while a VPD update or optrom flash operation is accessing the same flash registers. The unsynchronized accesses can interleave and corrupt flash-version reads.
Is normal flash activity alone sufficient to trigger it?
No. The described issue requires concurrency between the specific sysfs reset operation and a VPD or optrom flash operation. The data does not indicate that a standalone VPD update or optrom operation is affected.
What is the mitigation if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
Avoid running the affected sysfs reset operation concurrently with VPD updates or optrom flash operations. Serialize those administrative operations so flash-register reads cannot overlap.
