UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89858: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: qla2xxx: Bound image count in qla2x00updatefruversions() qla2x00updatefruversions() copies the user-supplied BSG request into a fixed 256-byte stack buffer (bsg[DMAPOOLSIZE]) and then iterates list->count times over the qlaimageversion array embedded in that buffer, advancing the image pointer each iteration. count is taken directly from user input with no upper bound, while only (DMAPOOLSIZE - sizeof(list->count)) / sizeof(struct qlaimageversion) = 6 entries actually fit. A larger count walks the image pointer off the end of the stack buffer, reading adjacent kernel stack memory and sending it to the device via qla2x00writesfp(). Reject requests whose declared count does not fit in the buffer.

In qla2x00_update_fru_versions(), reject requests whose declared count exceeds the number of qla_image_version entries that fit in the 256-byte stack buffer: (DMA_POOL_SIZE - sizeof(list->count)) / sizeof(struct qla_image_version) = 6.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed if they use the qla2xxx SCSI driver and permit a user to submit the relevant BSG request. The listed packages include linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs the ability to supply a crafted BSG request to qla2x00_update_fru_versions(). The request must declare an image count larger than the six qla_image_version entries that fit in the driver’s 256-byte stack buffer.
What is the impact of a successful exploit?
The driver can read past its fixed stack buffer and pass adjacent kernel stack memory to the device through qla2x00_write_sfp(). This can expose kernel stack data to the attached device.
How can I determine whether a system has received the fix?
The fix rejects requests whose declared image count cannot fit in the buffer. Check the installed Ubuntu kernel package against Ubuntu’s CVE-2026-89858 security advisory or verify that the kernel includes upstream commit de62cf265dbe309f34f144a6cdbca9240317727e.
