UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89879: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: s2255: bound JPEG frame size before copying into the buffer s2255fillbuff() memcpy()s vc->jpgsize bytes of a captured JPEG/MJPEG frame into the vb2 plane. vc->jpgsize is taken verbatim from the S2255MARKERFRAME header the device sends (pdword[4] in saveframe()) and, unlike the frame payload length just above it, is never bounded: payload = le32tocpu(pdword[3]); if (payload > vc->reqimagesize) / payload is checked ... / return -EINVAL; vc->pktsize = payload; vc->jpgsize = le32tocpu(pdword[4]); / ... jpgsize is not / A malicious or malfunctioning device can therefore report a jpgsize larger than the destination vb2 plane, and the memcpy() writes past it. jpgsize is a signed int, so a value with the top bit set also turns into a huge length. Reject a frame whose jpgsize is negative or exceeds the plane size before copying it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems are exposed when the s2255 media driver processes JPEG or MJPEG frames supplied by an S2255 capture device. The affected code is in the kernel's handling of device-provided frame metadata.
What would an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker would need to cause an S2255 device to report a crafted JPEG frame size in its frame header. A malicious or malfunctioning device can provide a negative or oversized jpg_size value that is then used for the copy length.
What can be done if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
Avoid using S2255 capture devices that are untrusted or suspected to be malfunctioning. The issue is triggered by device-supplied frame metadata, so limiting access to trusted capture hardware reduces exposure.
