UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89887: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: i2c: ov7740: fix use-after-destroy in remove The ov7740remove() function had a severe teardown order bug where it destroyed the driver's mutex before freeing the V4L2 control handler which relies on that mutex, leading to a use-after-destroy kernel panic. Furthermore, the driver explicitly called v4l2ctrlhandlerfree() and mutexdestroy() sequentially, but then called ov7740freecontrols() which invokes both of them a second time, resulting in a double-free. This patch fixes the issue by unregistering the subdevice first, and relying exclusively on ov7740freecontrols() to safely tear down the mutex and control handler in the correct order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu kernel package listed in the advisory are exposed when the ov7740 media I2C driver is in use. The issue occurs during driver removal or teardown, rather than during ordinary runtime operation alone.
What does an attacker need to exploit the vulnerability?
The supplied vector indicates local access with low privileges and no user interaction. The description does not specify the exact mechanism a local attacker would use to trigger removal of the ov7740 driver.
What is the likely impact if the issue is triggered?
The teardown bug can cause a use-after-destroy kernel panic and also performs double-free cleanup. The provided severity vector rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts as high.
What change fixes the teardown problem?
The fix unregisters the V4L2 subdevice before control cleanup and relies only on ov7740_free_controls() to release the mutex and V4L2 control handler. This prevents destroying the mutex before the control handler uses it and avoids freeing those resources twice.
