UBUNTU-CVE-2026-89893: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: cx23885: cancel NetUP CI work before teardown netupciexit() frees a netupcistate while its work item, netupreadcistatus(), may still be pending or running on the system workqueue. The worker obtains the state with containerof() and dereferences it, so it must not outlive the state. netupciinit() queues the initial status read, and CI GPIO interrupts subsequently queue the same work from netupcislotstatus(). During remove, cx23885finidev() calls freeirq() before the CI device is unregistered. freeirq() prevents further IRQ handlers from running, but does not drain work queued previously, so the worker can run after netupciexit() frees the state. Call cancelworksync() before dvbcaen50221release() and kfree(). This issue was found by an in-house static analysis tool.

Call cancel_work_sync() before dvb_ca_en50221_release() and kfree() during teardown, so the netup_read_ci_status work item cannot access freed netup_ci_state memory.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are affected when the cx23885 media driver is in use with NetUP CI functionality. The vulnerable path involves CI status work queued during initialization or by CI GPIO interrupts.
What condition triggers the use-after-free?
The condition occurs during device removal when a CI status work item was already queued or is running. Although free_irq() prevents new interrupt handlers, it does not drain previously queued work, allowing the worker to dereference state after netup_ci_exit() frees it.
Does an attacker need remote access or user interaction to exploit this?
The provided vector is local, requires low privileges, and requires no user interaction. The data does not describe a remote trigger or specific exploitation method beyond the driver teardown race.
What mitigation is indicated if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
The provided fix cancels and synchronizes the pending CI work with cancel_work_sync() before releasing and freeing the NetUP CI state. No operational workaround or configuration-based mitigation is provided.
