Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which Ubuntu kernel package variants are listed as affected?

The listed variants are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.

2

What condition is required for the invalid pointer dereference to occur?

The durable scavenger thread creation must fail, causing server_conf.dh_task to contain an ERR_PTR while durable_scavenger_running is set to true. A subsequent server reset then attempts to stop that task.

3

Where does the invalid pointer get used?

During reset handling, ksmbd_stop_durable_scavenger() calls kthread_stop(server_conf.dh_task). If the earlier thread creation failed, that pointer is an ERR_PTR rather than a valid task pointer.
