UBUNTU-CVE-2026-90249: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: light: gp2ap002: Fix unbalanced runtime PM on repeated event writes The IIO core does not filter duplicate writes to the event enable attribute, so writing the same value twice invokes writeeventconfig() twice. Enabling twice leaks a runtime PM reference, preventing the device from ever suspending again; disabling twice underflows the usage count and triggers a "Runtime PM usage count underflow" warning. Bail out early when the requested state matches the current state. While at it, switch to pmruntimeresumeandget() so a failed resume is propagated to userspace instead of silently marking the event enabled.

In the Linux kernel iio: light: gp2ap002 driver, make write_event_config() return early when the requested event-enable state matches the current state, and use pm_runtime_resume_and_get() so failed resume attempts are propagated to userspace.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are affected only if they use the gp2ap002 IIO light sensor driver and software writes its event-enable attribute repeatedly with the same value.
What must happen to trigger the problem?
An actor or local software component must be able to write the gp2ap002 IIO event-enable attribute. Writing an enable value twice leaks a runtime PM reference, while writing a disable value twice can underflow the runtime PM usage count and produce a warning.
What is the operational impact if this is triggered?
Repeated enables can prevent the device from suspending again because a runtime PM reference is leaked. Repeated disables can trigger a "Runtime PM usage count underflow" warning.
How can I tell whether the issue has already occurred?
Look for a "Runtime PM usage count underflow" warning following repeated writes to the device's event-enable attribute. A device that no longer suspends after repeated event enables may also indicate a leaked runtime PM reference.
