UBUNTU-CVE-2026-90297: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/sun4i: crtc: Propagate layer initialization error sun4icrtcinit() returns plain NULL when layer initialization fails, while all its other error paths return an error pointer. The only caller, sun4itconbind(), checks the result with ISERR() and happily continues with tcon->crtc set to NULL. sun4irgbinit() and sun4ilvdsinit() then dereference it in drmcrtcmask(), which oopses. Return the error pointer instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially affected when the sun4i DRM display pipeline is used and layer initialization fails during controller binding. The failure path involves the sun4i RGB or LVDS initialization paths.
What condition is required to trigger the crash?
Layer initialization in sun4i_crtc_init() must fail. The caller then treats the returned NULL as a non-error result, and subsequent RGB or LVDS initialization dereferences the unset CRTC pointer.
What is the observable impact if the issue is triggered?
The kernel can oops when sun4i_rgb_init() or sun4i_lvds_init() calls drm_crtc_mask() with a NULL CRTC pointer.
How can I determine whether a system has encountered this issue?
Look for a kernel oops associated with the sun4i DRM RGB or LVDS initialization path, particularly a NULL-pointer dereference involving drm_crtc_mask().
