UBUNTU-CVE-2026-92490: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 17, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: firmware: armscmi: Unrequest devices if driver registration fails scmidriverregister() requests protocol devices before registering the driver. If driverregister() fails, those requests remain in the global IDR and retain pointers to the module's ID table. Once the failed module load releases that storage, later request matching or SCMI device creation can dereference the stale pointers. Unrequest the complete protocol table before returning the registration failure. At this point table registration succeeded, so every entry is owned by the current registration attempt.

  9. Upgrade

Upgrade ubuntu/linux-riscv to a version that resolves this vulnerability.

    Fixed in 7.0.0-42.42.1
  10. Compensating control

In scmi_driver_register(), unrequest the complete protocol table before returning a driver-registration failure, so failed module loads do not leave requests in the global IDR pointing to the module's ID table.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.

2

What condition is required for the stale-pointer state to occur?

An SCMI driver must request protocol devices and then fail during driver registration. The failed load releases the module ID-table storage while the earlier device requests remain registered, allowing later matching or device creation to dereference stale pointers.
