UBUNTU-CVE-2026-92491: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 17, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: firmware: armscmi: Roll back partial protocol table registration scmiprotocoltableregister() can leave earlier requests registered when a later entry in the same ID table fails. Each request retains a pointer to the driver's ID table, so a failed module load can leave a dangling pointer after the module storage is released. Unrequest only the successfully registered prefix, in reverse order, before returning the failure. Leave the failed entry and the remaining entries untouched because matching requests can be owned by another driver.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?

The listed package families are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.

2

What condition triggers the unsafe state?

It occurs when scmi_protocol_table_register() registers one or more earlier requests from a driver's ID table and then a later entry fails during the same registration attempt. The failed module load can then release the driver's ID-table storage while the earlier registered requests still reference it.

3

What does the fix change?

On a registration failure, the fix unregisters the successfully registered entries before returning, processing that registered prefix in reverse order. It does not unregister the failed entry or later entries, because matching requests may belong to another driver.
