UBUNTU-CVE-2026-93053: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: speakup: keyhelp: guard letteroffsets possible out-of-range indexing helpinit() builds letteroffsets[] by using the first byte of each function name as an index via (start & 31) - 1. If functionnames are overridden from sysfs (root) with a name starting outside [a–z], the index underflows or exceeds the array, leading to OOB write. Function names can be overridden with the following commands as root: modprobe speakupsoft echo "0 bad" > /sys/accessibility/speakup/i18n/functionnames # then press Insert+2 on /dev/tty This fix checks the first letter in helpinit(), and if it is not in the [a–z] range the function returns an error to the caller. Eventually this error is propagated to drivers/accessibility/speakup/main.c:2217, which causes a bleep sound.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems with the Speakup accessibility subsystem available are exposed if a root-level actor can override its function names through the sysfs interface. The affected Ubuntu kernel packages listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
The described trigger requires root privileges to load the speakup_soft module and write a crafted function name to /sys/accessibility/speakup/i18n/function_names. The crafted name must begin with a character outside the lowercase a-z range, after which using the relevant Speakup key help path triggers the out-of-bounds write.
Is normal default use affected?
The issue depends on overriding Speakup function names through sysfs with a malformed value. The provided data does not indicate that the default function-name configuration contains such values.
What can be done before a patched kernel is installed?
Prevent untrusted or unintended root-level writes to /sys/accessibility/speakup/i18n/function_names, and avoid setting Speakup function names that begin outside lowercase a-z. Do not perform the described malformed override or invoke the associated key-help path after such an override.
How can administrators identify a potentially affected configuration?
Inspect whether Speakup is loaded and whether /sys/accessibility/speakup/i18n/function_names has been overridden. A function-name entry beginning with a character outside lowercase a-z is the condition described as causing the unsafe indexing.
