UBUNTU-CVE-2026-93115: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/mellanox: mlxbf-pmc: Check ACPICOMPANION() against NULL Every platform driver can be forced to match a device that doesn't match its list of device IDs because of devicematchdriveroverride(), so platform drivers that rely on the existence of a device's ACPI companion object need to verify its presence. mlxbfpmcprobe() passes the result of ACPICOMPANION() to acpidevicehid(), which dereferences it, so force-binding the driver to a device without an ACPI companion leads to a NULL pointer dereference. Accordingly, add a requisite ACPICOMPANION() check against NULL to the mlxbf-pmc driver and return -ENODEV when the companion is missing.

In the mlxbf-pmc driver, check ACPI_COMPANION() against NULL before passing its result to acpi_device_hid(), and return -ENODEV when the ACPI companion is missing.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the NULL pointer dereference?
An attacker or local actor must be able to force-bind the mlxbf-pmc platform driver to a device that has no ACPI companion object, using device_match_driver_override(). The vulnerable probe path then passes the missing companion to acpi_device_hid(), causing the NULL dereference.
Which systems are most relevant to assess?
Assess Ubuntu systems using one of the listed Linux kernel packages where the mlxbf-pmc platform driver is present, especially systems on Mellanox BlueField-related platform hardware. The issue concerns forced driver binding rather than normal matching against the driver's device-ID list.
What does the fix change when a device lacks an ACPI companion?
The corrected mlxbf-pmc driver checks whether ACPI_COMPANION() is NULL before using it. If no companion exists, probing fails with -ENODEV instead of reaching acpi_device_hid() and dereferencing NULL.
