UBUNTU-CVE-2026-93157: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 17, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwrng: xilinx-trng - propagate timeout before any data is read xtrngreadblock32() polls for 16-byte chunks but returns the number of bytes read even when the first poll times out. Its caller then treats a zero return as a short successful read, and partial reads for full 32-byte blocks can make the tail copy use a fixed block offset rather than the amount already produced. Return the poll error when no data has been read, preserve partial positive returns after some data is available, stop the generator on all collection exits, and append tail bytes at the current output count.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.

2

What condition triggers the faulty behavior?

The issue occurs when xtrng_readblock32() times out while polling for 16-byte chunks before any data has been read. It can also mishandle partial reads while assembling a full 32-byte block.

3

What are the effects of a partial or timed-out read?

A timeout before data is read can be treated by the caller as a successful short read. Partial reads can cause tail data to be copied using a fixed block offset rather than the current amount of output produced.

4

What does the resolution change in the driver?

The fix returns the polling error when no data was read, while retaining positive partial-read returns after data is available. It also stops the generator on every collection exit and appends tail bytes at the current output count.
