UBUNTU-CVE-2026-97588: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Sep 25, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/crypto: Map EBUSY to EIO when key conversion fails repeatedly When hardware persistently returns -EBUSY after exhausting retries, the error propagates to cryptofinalizerequest(). The crypto API's completion wrapper treats -EBUSY as a queueing status and swallows it, preventing the completion callback from firing. This causes callers using cryptowaitreq() to block indefinitely. Translate persistent -EBUSY to -EIO after retry exhaustion to ensure proper error propagation and callback invocation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What condition triggers the affected request to hang?

The hang occurs when s390 crypto key conversion repeatedly receives -EBUSY from hardware until its retry limit is exhausted. The -EBUSY status is then treated as a queueing result by the crypto API completion wrapper, so the request callback does not run.

2

How would this issue appear in an affected workload?

Callers that wait with crypto_wait_req() can block indefinitely because the completion callback is not invoked after persistent hardware -EBUSY errors.

3

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.
