UBUNTU-CVE-2026-97592: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/crypto: Fix missing scrub of temp buffers with AES ctr and gcm algorithm In function ctraescrypt() there is a buffer used to process remaining bytes < AESBLOCKSIZE. This buffer was not scrubbed and thus could lead to expose of unwanted data. When the buffer is used explicitly scrub it at the end of the code block to avoid exposure of maybe sensitive data. In a similar way the function gcmaescrypt() hat an error path where the CPACF param block was not scrubbed. Instead of return early now these error paths go to end of function where explicit scrubbing is done. Similar with the buffers which are part of the gcmsgwalk structs from the variables gwin and gwout.

Explicitly scrub the temporary buffer used for remaining bytes in ctr_aes_crypt(), the CPACF parameter block in gcm_aes_crypt(), and the buffers in the gcm_sg_walk structures referenced by gw_in and gw_out at the end of their code blocks; route error paths to the common cleanup code instead of returning early.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to be exposed?
The affected code is in the Linux kernel s390 crypto implementation for AES-CTR and AES-GCM. Exposure is therefore most relevant to systems using the s390 architecture and those cryptographic algorithms through the affected kernel code.
What is the impact of the missing scrubbing?
Temporary buffers and, on certain error paths, a CPACF parameter block were not cleared after use. This could expose unintended, potentially sensitive data left in those memory areas.
Are error conditions relevant to this issue?
Yes. The AES-GCM path included error returns that bypassed cleanup of the CPACF parameter block, while buffers associated with gcm_sg_walk structures also required scrubbing. The resolved code routes these paths through cleanup before returning.
