UBUNTU-CVE-2026-97931: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: us122l: Prevent write upgrades for read mappings The hwdep mmap callback rejects read-buffer mappings that are initially writable, but leaves VMMAYWRITE set on mappings created with PROTREAD. A process that can open the hwdep node ORDWR can later use mprotect() to make the mapping writable. The read allocation begins with struct usbstream. Its readsize member is used by the fault handler to decide which pages belong to the read buffer. The read VMA intentionally remains expandable because pcmusbstream uses mremap() after reading that size. Changing readsize first can therefore map and access pages beyond the allocation. The same member is also consumed by usbstreamfree(), where changing it can make freepagesexact() release pages outside the allocation. Clear VMMAYWRITE for read-buffer mappings after rejecting an initially writable VMA. This keeps the separate output-buffer mapping writable while preventing later permission upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions
What access does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
An attacker needs local access to open the ALSA us122l hwdep device node with O_RDWR. They can then create a read-buffer mapping with PROT_READ and later use mprotect() to add write permission.
What can exploitation allow after the mapping permissions are upgraded?
The attacker can alter the usb_stream read_size member. This can cause the fault handler to map pages beyond the intended allocation and can cause usb_stream_free() to release pages outside that allocation.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What can be done if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Restrict local access to the affected us122l hwdep device node, particularly access that permits opening it with O_RDWR. The issue requires that device-node access before a process can create and later upgrade the read-buffer mapping.
