UBUNTU-CVE-2026-97974: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: null-check fib6node before accessing in ip6delrtsiblings() syzbot reported a null-ptr-deref in ip6delrtsiblings() [0]. The stack trace hinted towards a null dereference of rt->fib6node when fn->leaf is accessed in ip6delrtsiblings(). With RTNLFLAGDOITUNLOCKED set, inet6rtmdelroute() operations run concurrently without acquiring the RTNL lock. In ip6routedel(), the route lookup happens under rcureadlock() without acquiring table->tb6lock. Between ip6routedel() looking up the route and ip6delrtsiblings() acquiring table->tb6lock, another thread can modify the routing table. For example, when an ECMP route is replaced via RTMNEWROUTE with NLMFREPLACE, fib6addrt2node() unlinks all old siblings and sets iter->fib6node = NULL. A reproducer was found that triggers this [1]. Add a check to ensure rt->fib6node is non-null before accessing it. Add a null check to ensure rt->fib6_node is non-null before accessing it in __ip6_del_rt_siblings().

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
The issue requires concurrent IPv6 route deletion and routing-table modification. A described trigger is replacing an ECMP route using RTM_NEWROUTE with NLM_F_REPLACE while a route deletion is in progress, causing the deleted route's fib6_node pointer to become NULL.
What is the likely impact of successful exploitation?
The reported outcome is a kernel null-pointer dereference in __ip6_del_rt_siblings(). This can cause a kernel fault during IPv6 route-management operations.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, and ubuntu/linux-aws-5.0.
