UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98074: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bonding: do not clear curractiveslave prematurely when releasing all slaves When releasing all slaves during bond destruction (all == true), bondreleaseone() unconditionally clears bond->curractiveslave to NULL in every iteration. If a backup slave is released before the active slave, bondalbdeinitslave() triggers rlbteachdisabledmaconprimary(), which increments the active slave dev promiscuity counter and sets bondinfo->primaryispromisc = 1. Because bond->curractiveslave was prematurely cleared to NULL when releasing the backup slave, the subsequent iteration releasing the active slave evaluates oldcurrent as NULL, so bondchangeactiveslave(bond, NULL) is skipped. Consequently, bondalbhandleactivechange() is never called to decrement the promiscuity counter, permanently leaking promiscuous mode on the physical device after bond teardown. When oldcurrent == slave, bondchangeactiveslave(bond, NULL) already sets bond->curractiveslave to NULL. We only need to avoid selecting a new active slave when all == true. Replace the if (all) branch with if (!all && oldcurrent == slave).

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are affected when they use bonding with ALB behavior and destroy a bond while releasing all slaves. The issue is tied to a teardown order where a backup slave is released before the active slave.
What is the practical impact after the bond is destroyed?
The former active physical device can remain in promiscuous mode because its promiscuity counter is not decremented during teardown. This leaves promiscuous mode enabled on that device after the bond has been removed.
Is a normal bond teardown always affected?
No. The described failure requires releasing all slaves during bond destruction, with a backup slave released before the active slave, and the ALB cleanup path that updates promiscuity state. The provided data does not establish that other bonding modes or teardown orders are affected.
How can I check whether a system has encountered the issue?
After tearing down an affected bond, check whether the former active physical interface remains in promiscuous mode. The condition to look for is promiscuous mode remaining enabled after the bond no longer exists.
