UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98090: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: restore active device pointers after failed sprout btrfsinitnewdevice() switches latestdev and possibly sbdev from the seed device to the new sprout device before creating the first writable chunks. If chunk creation or the subsequent sprout setup fails, the error path releases the new device without switching those pointers back. btrfsshowdevname() can then dereference the freed latestdev and crash. Restore the active device pointers to the latest seed device before removing and releasing the failed sprout device.

In btrfs_init_new_device(), restore the active device pointers (latest_dev and, if changed, s_bdev) to the latest seed device before removing and releasing a failed sprout device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu Linux kernel variant with Btrfs filesystems that use a seed device and perform a sprout operation are exposed. The listed software includes Ubuntu linux, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-riscv, and linux-gkeop.
What is required to trigger the crash?
A local attacker needs low privileges and must cause a Btrfs sprout operation to fail after the new device has become the active device pointer but before sprout setup completes. A later call to btrfs_show_devname() can dereference the released device pointer and crash the kernel.
Is a default Btrfs configuration affected?
The issue is tied to Btrfs seed-device sprouting and a failure during writable chunk creation or later sprout setup. The provided information does not indicate that ordinary Btrfs configurations without seed-device sprouting are affected.
