UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98091: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: detach failed sprout device from transaction update list When creating the first metadata chunk for a sprout filesystem, createchunk() adds the new device to the transaction devupdatelist through device->postcommitlist. If the subsequent system chunk creation fails, btrfsinitnewdevice() aborts the transaction and releases the device while postcommitlist is still linked. This triggers a warning in btrfsfreedevice() and leaves the transaction list referencing freed memory. Detach the device while holding chunkmutex before releasing it.

Detach the failed sprout device from the transaction update list while holding chunk_mutex, before releasing the device.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
An attacker or local user needs local access with low privileges and must cause creation of the first metadata chunk for a sprout Btrfs filesystem, followed by failure while creating the subsequent system chunk. The failure path aborts the transaction after the new device has been added to the transaction update list.
What is the practical impact if the vulnerable path is reached?
The failed device can be released while it remains linked in the transaction's device update list. This produces a warning in btrfs_free_device() and leaves the transaction list holding a reference to freed memory, with availability impact rated high.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-realtime.
