UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98218: Use After Free

Published Oct 6, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i2c: atr: fix dangling adapter pointer on add failure i2catraddadapter() stores atr->adapter[chanid] before i2caddadapter() so that the I2C bus notifier can match child clients during registration. On failure the channel is freed but the slot was left pointing at freed memory, which can lead to use-after-free in i2catrdeladapter() / cleanup and also block reuse with -EEXIST. Clear the slot on the i2caddadapter() error path before freeing chan.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What condition is required to trigger the use-after-free?

An attempt to add an ATR I2C adapter must fail in i2c_add_adapter(). The failure leaves the channel slot pointing to freed memory, which can later be used during adapter deletion or cleanup.

2

What operational symptom may appear before a use-after-free occurs?

The stale adapter slot can prevent the channel from being reused, causing a later add attempt to fail with -EEXIST.

3

Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
