UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98233: Race Condition
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/packet: clear RX owner on VNET header error Commit 61fad6816fc1 ("net/packet: tpacketrcv: avoid a producer race condition") added rxownermap and made tpacketrcv() claim a V1 or V2 ring slot before converting the virtio-net header. If the conversion fails, the drop path leaves the slot claimed. With a one-frame TPACKETV2 ring, an unsupported UDP GSO packet leaves the only slot unavailable, so the ring also drops the next valid packet. Clear the ownership bit on this error path. TPACKETV3 already clears its block state here.

Clear the RX ownership bit on the error path when VNET header conversion fails, so the dropped packet does not leave the ring slot claimed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using an affected Ubuntu Linux kernel package are exposed only when applications use AF_PACKET with a TPACKET_V1 or TPACKET_V2 receive ring and virtio-net header processing. TPACKET_V3 is not affected by this specific stale ownership condition.
What traffic is needed to trigger the failure?
An unsupported UDP GSO packet must reach the affected packet ring and fail virtio-net header conversion after the ring slot has been claimed. In a one-frame TPACKET_V2 ring, this can leave the only slot unavailable and cause the next valid packet to be dropped.
How can I determine whether the issue is affecting packet capture or processing?
Look for applications using one-frame TPACKET_V2 AF_PACKET rings with virtio-net headers, then test whether an unsupported UDP GSO packet is followed by loss of a valid packet. The affected behavior is a ring slot remaining claimed after the conversion error.
What can be done if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
Avoid the affected TPACKET_V1 and TPACKET_V2 configuration where possible, particularly one-frame TPACKET_V2 rings that process virtio-net headers. TPACKET_V3 already clears its block state on this error path.
