UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98287: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pppoatm: ensure a writable skb header and linear data In pppoatmsend(), LLC encapsulation checks whether there is sufficient headroom for the 4-byte LLC header, but does not ensure that the skb header is writable. Normal transmit packets passing through pppstartxmit() have their header unshared via skbcowhead(). However, packets can also reach pppoatmsend() via PPP channel bridging (PPPIOCBRIDGECHAN) without going through pppstartxmit(). Use skbcowhead() to ensure both sufficient headroom and a writable header before pushing the LLC header. While at it: - Call pskbmaypull(skb, 1) before inspecting skb->data[0] to prevent out-of-bounds reads on zero-length or non-linear frames (e.g. from bridging). - Defer SCCOMPPROT protocol compression until after pppoatmmaysend() succeeds. This eliminates the temporary skb allocation on admission failure and completely removes the fragile "undo" heuristic at the nospace label, avoiding any risk of reading uninitialized headroom or performing an unbalanced skbpush().

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most exposed to this issue?
Systems using the Linux PPP-over-ATM transmit path are affected, particularly where PPP channel bridging is configured with PPPIOCBRIDGECHAN. The described bypass applies to packets that reach pppoatm_send() through bridging rather than the normal ppp_start_xmit() path.
What conditions are needed to trigger the vulnerable path?
An attacker or source of malformed traffic would need to cause packets to reach pppoatm_send() through PPP channel bridging. Zero-length or non-linear frames are specifically relevant to the out-of-bounds-read condition, while shared skb headers are relevant to the missing writable-header check.
Are normal PPP transmit packets affected in the same way?
Normal transmit packets passing through ppp_start_xmit() already have their headers unshared with skb_cow_head(). The vulnerable condition arises because bridged packets can bypass that handling.
What is the practical mitigation if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Avoid or disable PPP channel bridging using PPPIOCBRIDGECHAN where operationally feasible. This prevents packets from taking the described path that bypasses ppp_start_xmit().
