UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98300: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tcp: Don't call skbcloneandcharger() for close()d listener in tcpv6dorcv(). tcpv6dorcv() no longer calls skbcloneandcharger() for TCPLISTEN since commit 073d89808c06 ("net: fix data-races around sk->skforwardalloc"). However, there is still a small race window between tcpv6rcv() and tcpv6dorcv(), where concurrent close() changes TCPLISTEN to TCPCLOSE, causing skbcloneandcharger() to be called locklessly and resulting in the splat below. [0] Let's avoid calling skbcloneandcharger() for TCPCLOSE as well. This is fine for non-listeners because tcprcvstateprocess() drops skb for TCPCLOSE and optskb was freed immediately anyway. Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and the corresponding FIPS variants: ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What conditions trigger the race?
The issue involves the IPv6 TCP receive path when a socket is concurrently closed. A listener can transition from TCP_LISTEN to TCP_CLOSE in the interval between tcp_v6_rcv() and tcp_v6_do_rcv(), leading to a lockless call to skb_clone_and_charge_r().
How might an affected system reveal this issue?
The reported symptom is a sk->sk_forward_alloc warning during inet_sock_destruct in net/ipv4/af_inet.c. The example warning occurred in the ksoftirqd context and included inet_sock_destruct in the stack trace.
