UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98388: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: exec: docloseonexec() before taking execupdatelock docloseonexec() currently happens while holding the execupdatelock, which is used in a lot of places that access process state to synchronize access checks. I recently added another such use of execupdatelock, causing a regression. docloseonexec() can block waiting for a reply from a filesystem. That means a hung filesystem can block codepaths that use execupdatelock; and it also means that a FUSE filesystem which attempts to inspect the calling process can deadlock. To avoid such problems, move docloseonexec() before the execupdatelock is taken, but after the FD table has been copied if necessary. I have looked through all the calls between the old and new position of the docloseonexec() call; there seems to be no file descriptor table access in between.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are most likely to be exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially affected when an exec operation closes file descriptors and a filesystem involved in that operation can block. The described deadlock scenario specifically involves FUSE filesystems that inspect the calling process.
What conditions are needed to trigger the problem?
An exec path must run do_close_on_exec() while holding exec_update_lock, and closing a descriptor must wait for a filesystem response. A hung filesystem can block other paths that need exec_update_lock; a FUSE filesystem inspecting the calling process can deadlock.
How can we recognize a possible impact in production?
Investigate processes stalled during exec activity together with filesystem operations that are not returning. A relevant symptom is code requiring exec_update_lock becoming blocked while a filesystem response is pending, particularly in environments using FUSE.
What is the remediation described by the fix?
The fix moves do_close_on_exec() to run before exec_update_lock is acquired, while still running it after the file-descriptor table is copied when required. This prevents filesystem waits during descriptor closure from occurring while the lock is held.
