UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98445: Low severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfs: don't let memory failures leak blocks and kill repairs LOLLM complains that a memory allocation failure in xrepnewbtaddblocks results in online repair leaking blocks that were previously allocated to write a new btree, but the problem is worse than that -- a limitation of the codebase is that the callers cannot undo the transaction /and/ return the error -- either you undo all changes and commit the transaction, or you error out and the filesystem goes down. However, the new btree space reservation object isn't that big (~48 bytes). Let's just do a NOFAIL allocation and the problem goes away.

Use a NOFAIL memory allocation in xrep_newbt_add_blocks so memory allocation failures do not leak blocks or bring down the filesystem.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required for this issue to occur?
The issue occurs during XFS online repair when allocation of the new btree space reservation object fails. The affected code path concerns a small allocation of approximately 48 bytes in xrep_newbt_add_blocks.
What is the likely impact if the allocation fails?
The failure can leak blocks that were allocated for writing a new btree. Because the transaction cannot both be undone and return an error, the filesystem can instead go down.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
