UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98553: Low severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: autofs: fix sbi->pipe file reference leak in autofskillsb() When autofsfillsuper() fails before clearing AUTOFSSBICATATONIC (for example, when findgetpid() fails on an invalid pgrp mount option, or when an fscontext is closed before mounting), deactivatelockedsuper() invokes autofskillsb() -> autofscatatonicmode(sbi). Because AUTOFSSBICATATONIC is still set in sbi->flags, autofscatatonicmode() returns early without calling fput(sbi->pipe), permanently leaking the pipe struct file reference. Explicitly release sbi->pipe in autofskillsb() if it is still non-NULL after autofscatatonicmode().

In autofs_kill_sb(), explicitly release sbi->pipe with fput() when sbi->pipe is still non-NULL after autofs_catatonic_mode().
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions trigger the leaked file reference?
The leak occurs when autofs_fill_super() fails before AUTOFS_SBI_CATATONIC is cleared. Examples given are an invalid pgrp mount option causing find_get_pid() to fail, or closing an fs_context before mounting.
Is a successful autofs mount required for this issue to occur?
No. The affected path is a failed autofs superblock setup followed by superblock deactivation, rather than a successfully completed mount.
What is the impact of the failure?
The autofs pipe struct file reference is permanently leaked because autofs_catatonic_mode() returns early while the catatonic flag remains set. The resolved change explicitly releases sbi->pipe in autofs_kill_sb() when it remains non-NULL.
