UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98585: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Oct 18, 2026
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: eth: fbnic: Avoid rounding zero ring sizes rounduppowoftwo() is undefined for zero. ethtool permits a zero ring size to reach the driver, where the minimum-size check should reject it. Leave zero unchanged while rounding nonzero ring sizes. The minimum-size check then rejects zero deterministically without changing the established behavior for other values.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Who is exposed to this issue?

Systems using the affected Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are exposed when the fbnic Ethernet driver is present and its ring sizes can be configured through ethtool. Exploitation requires high privileges and local access.

2

What input triggers the vulnerable path?

A zero ring-size value supplied through ethtool can reach the fbnic driver. The driver rounds the value with roundup_pow_of_two(), which is undefined for zero instead of allowing the minimum-size validation to reject it deterministically.

3

Are confidentiality or integrity impacts indicated?

The provided vector indicates no confidentiality or integrity impact. It indicates high availability impact, so the primary concern is denial of service.
