UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98594: Low severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tg3: clean up PHYLIB resources on probe failure tg3getinvariants() can register an MDIO bus and connect a PHY for USEPHYLIB devices. If tg3initone() later fails, its common error path releases the mappings and netdev without undoing those PHYLIB resources. Disconnect the PHY and unregister the MDIO bus before the remaining teardown. Guard PHY cleanup with USEPHYLIB to match tg3phyinit(), and call tg3mdiofini() unconditionally to match tg3mdioinit(). The existing ISCONNECTED and MDIOBUSINITED flags make both helpers safe when initialization only completed partially. This issue was identified during our ongoing static-analysis research while reviewing kernel code.

In the tg3 probe-failure teardown path, disconnect the PHY and unregister the MDIO bus before the remaining teardown; guard PHY cleanup with USE_PHYLIB and call tg3_mdio_fini() unconditionally, using the existing IS_CONNECTED and MDIOBUS_INITED flags to safely handle partial initialization.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the tg3 network driver are relevant, specifically devices built with the USE_PHYLIB path where the driver registers an MDIO bus and connects a PHY during probing.
What condition triggers the vulnerable cleanup path?
The issue occurs when tg3_get_invariants() has initialized PHYLIB-related resources, but tg3_init_one() subsequently fails. The failure path then tears down other driver resources without first disconnecting the PHY and unregistering the MDIO bus.
