UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98597: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: sr9700: include receive overhead in the length check The receive fixup subtracts the Ethernet CRC from the reported packet length, but compares that payload length against the whole remaining receive buffer. The following copy starts after the three-byte header, and the cursor advance consumes both that header and the four-byte CRC. Require the payload to fit after SRRXOVERHEAD before copying it or advancing to the next packet. The loop already ensures that the remaining buffer is larger than the overhead, so the subtraction is safe. The issue was found by our static-analysis tool.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which deployments are potentially exposed?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and the corresponding AWS, Azure, and GCP FIPS kernel packages. Exposure is relevant where the SR9700 USB network driver processes received packets.
What would an attacker need to do to trigger the issue?
An attacker would need to cause a malformed received packet to be processed by the SR9700 driver. The flaw is in validation of packet length against the remaining receive buffer before data is copied and the receive cursor advances.
What impact should be prioritized during triage?
The supplied severity vector indicates high availability impact and low confidentiality impact, with no integrity impact. It also indicates no privileges or user interaction are required, while attack complexity is low.
