UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98608: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/virtio: fix object leak in virtiogpuresourcecreateioctl() virtiogpuresourcecreateioctl() calls drmgemobjectrelease() on the drmgemhandlecreate() error path instead of dropping the reference it owns, so obj->funcs->free() never runs and the virtiogpuobject, its pages and sg table, the resource id and the host-side resource are leaked. Use drmgemobjectput() instead.

Replace the drm_gem_object_release() call on the drm_gem_handle_create() error path with drm_gem_object_put() so the owned reference is dropped and the virtio_gpu_object, its pages and sg table, resource id, and host-side resource are freed.
Linux kernel drm/virtio error-path object cleanup in virtio_gpu_resource_create_ioctl() = drm_gem_object_put()

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are in scope?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-fips, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, and linux-gcp-fips kernel packages. The flaw is in the virtio GPU DRM driver path.
What level of access is required to exploit this issue?
The CVSS vector indicates local access and low privileges are required, with no user interaction required. It also indicates additional attack conditions are present, but the provided data does not specify what those conditions are.
What is the practical impact of successful exploitation?
The affected error path leaks virtio GPU objects, associated pages and scatter-gather tables, resource IDs, and host-side resources. The CVSS assessment indicates high availability impact and no confidentiality or integrity impact.
