UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98872: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: freevxfs: don't BUG() on unknown typed-extent type vxfsbmaptyped() handles four typed-extent types and calls BUG() in its default case, so an on-disk typed extent with any other type value crashes the kernel. It is reachable from ioctl(FIBMAP) on a regular file: kernel BUG at fs/freevxfs/vxfsbmap.c:230! RIP: vxfsbmaptyped fs/freevxfs/vxfsbmap.c:230 [inline] vxfsbmap1+0x128a/0x12d0 fs/freevxfs/vxfsbmap.c:257 Replace the BUG() with WARNONONCE() and return 0 -- the value vxfsbmaptyped() already returns on failure (and from the DEV4 case above); vxfsgetblk() maps 0 to -EIO, so the ioctl fails cleanly.

In the Linux kernel freevxfs implementation, replace the BUG() default case in vxfs_bmap_typed() with WARN_ON_ONCE() and return 0, so vxfs_getblk() maps the failure to -EIO and ioctl(FIBMAP) fails cleanly.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the kernel crash?
An attacker needs a regular file on a freevxfs filesystem whose on-disk typed extent has an unrecognized type value. The crash is reached when ioctl(FIBMAP) is invoked on that file.
What is the practical impact after the fix?
Instead of triggering a kernel BUG and crashing the system, an unknown typed-extent type produces a warning and the block lookup fails. The ioctl then fails cleanly with an I/O error.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
