UBUNTU-CVE-2026-98873: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nfconntrackexpect: zero at allocation time There are occasional LLM hints wrt. leaking uninitialized data to userspace via ctnetlink. Just zero at allocation time, expectations are not frequently used these days. Intentionally keeps init as-is because we could theoretically support re-init, so add the missing exp->dir there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel package variants are in scope?
The affected software list includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What is the practical impact described for this issue?
The issue concerns potential disclosure of uninitialized kernel data to userspace through ctnetlink. It is therefore described as an information-leak concern rather than a code-execution issue.
How likely is the affected netfilter functionality to be used?
The description notes that conntrack expectations are not frequently used these days. Systems that do not use this functionality may have less practical exposure, but the provided data does not specify configurations that are unaffected.
